As the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in India, and a blockbuster in Hong Kong since it was first released on 1 September, 2011, the 3 Idiots is surely not going to disappoint you.

Loosely adapted from a popular book, Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat, 3 Idiots is a story about friendship, understanding, family, love and passion for life. Though the subjects may be a little clichéd for you, it is a great story conveying great messages in a completely new and fresh angle.

The narrator of the film is Rancho’s good friend at the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), Farhan. Farhan is on a plane that is going to take off when he suddenly receives the news of his long-lost friend, Rancho. In order to meet Rancho, Farhan pretends to be very ill and rushes off the plane without hesitation. He sets off for the trip of finding Rancho along with their great friend Raju and Rancho’s arch-rival, Chatur. Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day. In their trip, Farhan recalls the snatches with Rancho in the four years of university until they find out Rancho’s big secret.

3 Idiots is definitely a worth-watching film with high educational value. Through the spoon-fed education from Professor Viru (Virus) and people’s different attitude towards education, a positive learning attitude has been delivered which reflects the real-life situation.

The film puts emphasis on two key messages. The first one is that you can be become successful under the spoon-fed education. However, you will become more successful if you are not just studying for the sake of your future career and really enjoy what you are studying. Chatur and Rancho are typical examples of these two types of people. Chatur can memorize the complete definition for the word “machine” whereas Rancho summarizes the gist and brings up examples from daily life. When they have exams, Rancho comes first and Chatur comes second every time.

The second message is that you should go for what you are really passionate about. You can only do your best when you are doing what you love whole-heartedly. Only then will you become happy and will success come to you. Farhan always comes last in the exams. It is because he has never really liked engineering. He studies engineering just because his father wants him to. However, deep down in his heart, what Farhan feels passionate about is taking photos of wild animals. In the end, through understanding and communication, Farhan’s father finally agrees and supports Farhan’s decision of being a wildlife photographer. Other messages like “Believe yourself” and “Be optimistic” are conveyed in this movie as well. Rancho has a signature line in the film. He always says “All is well” whenever he comes across with difficulties. This positive attitude should really be adopted by every single person, especially teenagers who can give up so easily nowadays.

A star is deducted because of some illogical scenes. All in all, despite the illogical scenes, it is really an excellent film with laughter and tears that worth using three hours to watch. If you haven’t watched it, don’t hesitate. Just sit back and enjoy 3 Idiots.
